How to Translate a Video

• Login to your Google account here  and click the “Sign in” button in the upper right hand corner of the screen.
  If you do not currently have an account you can create one here.
• Go to the FacingFuture.TV Youtube Channel page here.
• Click on the “Videos” tab just under the channel logo i.e. which is under the main channel page banner.
• Browse to the video that you have been assigned and click on it. After doing this you can stop it from playing by clicking the “Pause” button.
• Continue to “Method 1” (below).

Method 1 (On-line approach):

• Just under the video’s title you will see a tool bar where you can click on the three dots i.e. “. . .” Under this menu you can choose “Add translation”. At this point you enter into the editor window. Please note the following:
  • At the top of the editor window are two tabs allowing one to work on “Titles and descriptions” and “Subtitles/CC”.
  • You may choose to translate the content under one or both of these tabs. Note that having a translation of the “Title and description” of the video helps it to be found by search engines in that language.
  • Translating the “Subtitles/CC” will allow non-English speaking people to understand the content of the video.
• To begin the process of translating, at the top of the screen, click on “Switch language”. There will be drop-down menu where you can choose the language you are going to translate into…Google places a number of choices based on its knowledge of what country you are actually in. If the language you need is not there, you can search for it in the search box and then select it.
• In some cases, you may need to click on an “Edit” box near the top right to be able to start entering translation text.
• The subtitles are segmented into boxes along the left hand side of the video. Click on a box just below the English text and you should be able to start entering your translation.
• Note:
  • It is not necessary to translate the entire transcript at once. It is possible to “submit” what you’ve completed and come back later and continue the work. If you decide to do this, be sure to click on the “No” radio button to indicated that the translation has not yet been completed and is not ready for review.
  • Also note that you can choose the “Auto translate” option and Google will use its translator to translate all the text allowing you to then just go and make corrections or improvements to the translations rather than typing it all in from scratch. This is the  personal “Modus Operandi” of the translator.
• After entering your text in all the boxes you can view the timing of your translation subtitles by playing the video from the start. You can adjust its timing clicking on the boxes that appear just under the video and dragging their edges where you want them to be.
• After your translation subtitles play to your satisfaction click on the “Submit” button near the upper right of the video window and select the “Yes” radio button to indicate that your translation has been completed.
• Note: Your translation will not appear as a selection for the video until it has been published. Translations have to go through 3 stages.
  • Submitted but not completed.
    In this case you can come back later and complete the work or alternatively, another translator can pick up where you left off and complete the work. It is possible to collaborate on a translation.
  • Submitted and Complete.
    At this point the translation is complete but it still needs to be reviewed by the owner of the video (Stuart or his proxy).
  • Published.
    After the video has been reviewed by the owner, they will publish it.  The  subtitles will now be available for selection under “Subtitles” by a person viewing the video.

For the Video Owner or their Proxy

After a translation has been completed and submitted for review it must be published by the Video owner (i.e. Stuart Scott) or one of his designated proxies. This describes the procedure to publish a video.

• Login to Youtube (google) as Stuart or his designated proxy.
• Go to the FacingFuture.TV channel here.
• Once on the channel’s page click on the Scientists Warning logo in the upper right and choose “Creator Studio” in the drop-down menu. A window will appear on the left which will be the “Creator Studio” menu.
• Choose “Translations & Transcriptions” and then “community contributions” under it.
• A list of Videos with translations needing to be reviewed will appear. The list will show the Video name, Language of the submission, Last Modified, Sections (i.e. Titles and description, Subtitles/CC), and an Action field. Click on the review button, on the right hand side to review that video.
• After clicking “Review” you will see at the top of the window a “Titles and description” pane and a “Subtitles/CC” pane. The content of the pane open will be displayed below.
• As a reviewer you can use the google translate version of the translation provided to get a very rough idea of the translation to help you to decide to go ahead and publish it or not. If it looks okay then click on the “Publish” button. If it looks like some profanity and maliciously inserted you can choose to click on the “Report” button. If doesn’t look very good you can click on the “Needs more work” button.
• Be sure to review both the Title and description as well as Subtitles/CC sections.
• Note that the Title and description section is important from the perspective of making the video visible to search engines working in that language.
