Stuart Scott — Update Stuart recently spent about a week at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, undergoing tests and meeting with medical staff. It was determined that although the tumors are still there, they have not increased in size. This is positive news since is is usually a very aggressive form of cancer. The tumors may actually be dead, but he will need to return to the Mayo Clinic in 10 weeks for more imaging and tests to determine if so and how to proceed. In the meantime, he’s back home in Hawaii to focus on his health, personal situation, resume climate work (with more calm and less stress), and planning for COP26. SW Youtube Channel Our YouTube channel is being updated. We now have a new description for the channel, which was put together by several SW members, including Stuart. We invite you to view and share videos from the Scientists’ Warning YouTube channel: http://www.scientistswarning.tv Our latest video, Woodstock +50, was recorded in Madrid, Spain, during COP25, and features film director, Michael Wadleigh and our executive director, Stuart Scott. In 1969, 50 years ago, film director Michael Wadleigh captured the music festival that defined an era in the documentary ‘Woodstock.’ The vision of the youth of that ‘baby boom’ era was best articulated by Joni Mitchell two images… “We’re caught in the Devil’s Bargain… and… we’ve got to get ourselves back to ‘the Garden’.” In addition, another video from COP25 called Corporate Control and the Climate Meltdown, features Dr. Luiz Marques, professor and former banker, as well as Stuart Scott. Both Dr. Marques and Stuart Scott are members of the ISEE (International Society for Ecological Economics). Dr. Luiz Marques, Professor of Environmental History at the State University of Campinas in São Paolo, Brazil shares an in-depth exploration and explanation of how our current ‘neoclassical’ economic system is responsible for the climate crisis and ecological deterioration, leading to a probable collapse of local ecosystems, and the general inability to grow food for human consumption. Just in case you haven’t heard Greta Thunberg’s latest speech, here she is at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, once again speaking truth to power. SW Activities Dr. Alison Green, SW National Director for the UK, was recently interviewed for an article on education by the Guardian. Congratulations Alison! AIM (Academic International Mobilisation) AIM is taking forward some of the ideas that Alison developed for Transition Lab. It is launching in 2020, and exists independently. It seeks to mobilise academics globally, to foster collective action to address the climate and ecological emergency, and to motivate new thinking about what universities of the future need to do. First and foremost, they need to encourage planetary stewardship and living within planetary boundaries. This will mean a radical new curriculum, amongst other things. Many universities globally have declared a climate emergency, yet few are taking radical and urgent action. Starting very soon, University College London (UCL) and Trinity College Dublin will be taking part in a pilot for AIM. Academics and students will seek to work with University senior management, to forge ‘The Great Transition.’ The link to the paper outlining the Global Peaceful Revolution is here https://www.academia.edu/41535151/Peaceful_Academic_Revolution_to_Help_Humanity_Resolve_our_Global_Crises The one page synopsis from Alison Green is also available on the SW website: https://www.scientistswarning.org/academic-international-mobilisation-aim/ Please disseminate widely, particularly those of you who are academics and/or have academic colleagues. SW UK – Local Action Participation If you would like to be notified, via email, of more local actions/activities being planned in the UK, please contact Bill Dowling. Please indicate your location as well as any specific interests you may have pertaining to the climate crisis. [email protected] Volunteers The Scientists’ Warning Team welcomes your assistance. It is quite by intention that we do not seek funding. First, it puts an organization in competition with other allied organizations for the scarce philanthropic funds available. Second, it subjects the organization to the editorial bias of the funders, which is sometimes subtle and sometimes overt. Third, establishing a budget based upon fundraising forces an organization to devote significant time and energy to covering the ongoing budget from month to month and year to year. Since we are not funded, all work of the Scientists’ Warning initiative (.org and .TV) is accomplished by our teams on a volunteer basis. Please consider joining one of these teams.
